Meet Austeen.
Somehow you found your way here. And in my experience, that kind of thing is never really an accident. So welcome. I am glad you are here. Now let me tell you a little about who I am before we figure out why.
Meet Austeen Heeney
She was already winning by the rules.
A Master of Science in Athletic Training. A license in Massage Therapy. Over 1,000 hours of yoga certification. The 2025 Michigan Massage Champion. 4th at the American Massage Championship in her categories. A 95% retention rate that most in the industry would kill for. Every credential, every hour logged, every “right” box checked, and checked really damn well.
That was the blueprint. Do it right, do it thoroughly, do it better than everyone else in the room. And she did.
But somewhere underneath all that doing, she was running the same invisible rules everyone else was running, moving fast because rushing is how you thought you got to where you were going, saying yes because yes looked like ambition and drive, filling every inch of the calendar because a full calendar looked like a life that was important and mattered. She wasn’t failing at running on the hamster wheel. She was dominating it. She was succeeding at it. That was the problem.
Dominating the wheel doesn’t get you off the wheel.
She had it. All of it. A yoga studio. A massage practice. A team under her, yoga teachers she’d trained and trusted, working for her. She was doing what she loved, every single day, for other people. Massaging bodies. Teaching classes. Holding space. Caring for and loving on client after client, student after student.
That’s the part that has to sit for a second: she wasn’t failing. She’d built exactly what she set out to build. Everyone around her would have called it the win.
And at nine o’clock at night, after a full day of all of it, after the last class of a yin sequence she’d just taught, she was on the floor of her own studio, sobbing. Screaming. Couldn’t get up. Her body in full, physical rebellion, not a metaphor, an actual mutiny, flat on the floor she’d built her name on. She had to call a friend and stay on the phone with her because she genuinely didn’t trust what she’d do alone.
In the moment, she told herself she had no idea what was happening. Looking back, she knew exactly what it was: she’d hit her limit and never saw herself get close to it, because she was moving too fast to notice.
Everything… the studio, the team, the classes, the care she poured into every single person who walked through her door, had outgrown the level of care she was giving herself. It’s not that she stopped checking in with her body. She checked in more than most people ever do. But the pace she was keeping needed a level of care that kept climbing right along with it, and she never adjusted upward to meet it. She kept giving herself the same care while everything else kept growing around her.
And at some point, she truly surpassed what was possible. There was no amount of hours in a day, no optimization trick, no better routine that could have given her body what it needed while she carried everything else she was carrying. It wasn’t that she failed at taking care of herself. It was math. The pace had outrun the ceiling of what any amount of care could keep up with.
And the cost wasn’t abstract. It was her sanity. It was the integrity, the quality, the badassery she knew she could bring her clients and students, because she’d done it before, and now couldn’t, because there was nothing left underneath the giving.
She’d built the whole thing right. And the whole thing right was what put her on that floor.
The obvious next move, once she could stand again, was to keep going, she was good at this, ranked for this, already proven at this. Cash it in. Scale it. Build the next chapter on top of the one that had just broken her body on the floor of her own studio.
She looked at it and said: yeah, but I don’t fucking want to.
So she decided to burn it down. Not add a boundary. Not a better schedule. Dismantle the entire system she’d built and stop living by what she’d been told success was supposed to look like for her.
That refusal was the actual work. Not another certification. Not another “right” move. The willingness to be disobedient, to culture, to the blueprint, to her own resume, long enough to ask what she actually wanted underneath what she’d already proven she could do.
Because here’s what she’d figured out in her own body first, before she ever taught it to anyone else: a woman can only live the life she actually wants to the degree she’s willing to be disobedient to culture. Not louder. Not more disciplined. Disobedient. Culture is a cult on a larger scale, and the invisible rules run the show for as long as you agree to follow them without noticing you’re following them at all.
So she got off the wheel. Slowed down long enough to see the rules she’d never actually agreed to. And built something on the other side of that instead.
This is where Free To Be lives now.
Yin yoga to teach the body how to slow down instead of just being told to. Somatic work to rebuild the relationship with herself that got lost inside the doing. Exposure, real, uncomfortable, repeated exposure to disappointing people, until disappointing them stops being a five-alarm fire and starts being Tuesday. Mentorship that shows up day in and day out, not just for the epiphany, but for the quest into self you’re about to embark on, the kind where you can never look back. Retreats that pull you far enough out of your life to finally see the blueprint you’ve been living inside of, and choose, on purpose, whether you’re keeping it.
None of it is about doing more. All of it is about becoming ruthless about what deserves you.

What People Are Saying
“Austeen is one in a million!! Always and forever that will be my comment!! Free to Be is a safe environment to be yourself and call out your needs, weaknesses, and desires with listening ears & hearts!!”
“I came to know Austeen 1.5 years ago when I engaged her for neck & back issues I encountered post-spinal surgery 10 years ago. I was under another Massage Therapist’s care for 8 years but never achieved anywhere near the results I see with Austeen. I see her bi-weekly, and she has been an integral part of my recovery to regain my quality of life and overall mental wellbeing. She is an intuitive, sensitive and ethical practitioner who invests in/cares deeply for her clients. She took a personal interest in my recovery by researching options and exercises specific to my needs – her care goes far beyond the massage table. Her massage training alongside her education in athletic training makes her extremely skilled at her craft. I can’t speak highly enough of her as a Practitioner.”
“Yin Yoga with Austen was fantastic, even life changing. This form – especially with Austeen’s leadership – was one of the best things I’ve done for my body. I highly recommend it for anyone!”
